The Perfect Marriage of Islay Smoke and Spanish Sweetness
This is the modern release of the legendary Lagavulin Distillers Edition. While Lagavulin is famous for its intense peat smoke, this special expression undergoes a “double maturation” process that transforms the character of the whisky.
After its initial aging in traditional American oak, the whisky is finished in Pedro Ximénez (PX) seasoned American oak casks. PX is an intensely sweet, dark sherry, and its influence adds rich layers of raisin, sticky dates, and dark chocolate that perfectly complement the bold, maritime smoke of the Lagavulin spirit.
Batch Note: This bottle features the newer packaging design (introduced c. 2022), which omits the specific vintage year from the front label, establishing this as a consistent, high-quality annual release rather than a vintage-specific bottling.
Tasting Profile:
-
Nose: Big, punchy peat smoke softened by distinct notes of raisins, dried fruit, and vanilla.
-
Palate: A complex mix of coastal salt, intense bonfire smoke, and a rich, syrupy sweetness from the sherry casks. Notes of espresso and salted toffee are prominent.
-
Finish: Very long and elegant. The oak spice and smoke linger, but with a mellower, fruitier edge than the standard 16 Year Old.
