This is a wonderful “dusty” gem for any brandy lover: a 1970s vintage bottling of Marquis de Montesquiou Armagnac, featuring the classic “Monopole” grade.
Marquis de Montesquiou is one of the most storied houses in Armagnac, famously founded by the direct descendants of the Comte d’Artagnan—the real-life Musketeer made famous by Alexandre Dumas. This heritage is proudly displayed on the label as “The Brandy of D’Artagnan.”
This specific bottle is a time capsule from the 1970s. Unlike modern Armagnacs, this was bottled at 70° Proof (approximately 40% ABV) in the old Imperial measure of 24.5 Fluid Ounces (approx. 70cl).
Having spent roughly 50 years in the bottle, this spirit will have developed the legendary “Old Bottle Effect” (OBE)—a richness and integration that modern bottlings simply cannot replicate. Expect a rustic, robust Armagnac profile with notes of stewed prunes, leather, old oak, and warming spice.
